The place to be when you want to learn

Year 5 SD Working Hard at Home

For the past 3 weeks, 5SD has been learning from home. We have all found it to be a new and at times challenging way to learn, however with resilience and connectedness, we are able to achieve anything. Here is a clip of the children (and one puppy) hard at it!

Student Blogging Challenge

5SD is taking part in the 2020 Student Blogging Challenge. We are hoping to connect with many new friends from around the world. Keep tuned in to see how we all go.

Week 1 Challenge is to create an avatar of yourself. Here is mine. I have blue eyes, wear blue-rimmed glasses and have short blonde hair.  You can guess where we live! My class and I are all looking forward to learning and connecting through the challenge!

2020 An Amazing Start

What an amazing start 5SD has had to 2020!

APS has begun with swimming, bike riding, and triathlons. Everyone was excited to become involved and have a go. The quality of narrative stories in the class is growing daily and the lattice method of multiplication is becoming a popular choice.

We are all connecting new friends, being curious about our learning and growing the bond within our class. So many exciting adventures to look forward to.

Hanging Onto the Bottom of the World

What a night! After all our hard work, auditions and rehearsals the Year 5 group of 2019 performed an amazing show. We made the audience laugh, had a clap along when we sang and gained confidence with each show.

Thanks to the guidance of Ms. Quodling, Tim Schwerdt, Mr. Barker and all the Year 5 staff, we have memories that will stay with us forever.

THE BEST WEEK AT TOONA!

Last week 5S had the Best Week at Toona, our school camp on the Gippsland Lakes, in Victoria. We all had such a positive experience, having a go at every activity the outdoor ed staff provided us with. Here are just some of the amazing activities we participated in:

Bike riding

Kayaking

Fishing

Police Boat visit

Kangaroo and Koala spotting

Camping

King Ball

and so many other things! We have put together a video with a snapshot of the things we did. Watch it and let us know what you think.

The week would not have been so successful without the help of a number of people.

Our amazing Outdoor Ed staff. Tom, Grace and Chole as well as Trish our amazing chef.

Mrs. de Paiva who laughed, rode, kayaked and camped with us. She gave up time with her family to be with us all, luckily she loves Toona so much!!

Charlotte and Otto, our wonderful Year 11’s who ran many activities and became friends with us all.

Have you ever visited the Gippsland Lakes?

What attributes did you use in order to have a successful experience?

Book Week – Oliver Phommavanh

It’s Book Week!  A wonderful week to explore everything related to reading, writing and everything else bookish.

To kick off Book Week, 5S had a visit from super popular author, Oliver Phommavanh.

Year 5 have been enjoying Oliver’s books in Book Chat, with favourites being:

  • ConNerd
  • Thai-riffic!
  • The Other Christy
  • Don’t Follow Vee (brand new book!)

Oliver taught 5S many awesome tricks to write funny stories and students completed lots of fun activities designed to fire up the creative juices.

Sensible photo

Silly photo!

What is one thing you learnt from Oliver about writing?

SOVEREIGN HILL

Year 5 Team had an amazing experience at Sovereign Hill this past week.

We explored life in the 1850s on the Victorian Goldfields- including going to school for 2 days just like an 1850’s child!

We gained an insight into the life that a child would experience and how differently boys and girls were treated.

We are now looking forward to creating our dioramas and sharing them with our school community.

Have you been to Sovereign Hill before? If so, what was your highlight?

PRINT ADS!

5S have been learning about persuasive writing and techniques throughout Term 2. This week, we have been looking at persuasive print ads.

We studied some powerful and popular advertisements that we see on billboards and in newspapers every day. Print ads use techniques such as:

  • Purposeful vocabulary
  • Lighting
  • Colour
  • Camera Angles
  • Body language
  • Symbols
  • Special Effects

Here are the print ads 5S created for a random product. Which ad hooks your attention and which persuasive techniques and devices have they used?

Mark Wilson is coming to Carey!

Next week, the Year 5s will be lucky enough to have Mark Wilson, a talented author and illustrator, visiting them as part of the Carey Celebrates Literature Festival.

Mark is best known for his picture story books about war, animals, convict children and extinct animals.

In preparation for this event, the Year 5 students have been  exploring Mark’s work and websites about him.

In the comment section, leave a response that addresses these points:

– Something new you learnt about Mark Wilson from exploring the websites.

– A question you’d like to ask Mark at the literature festival.
